I purchased this thinking that I could use it to enhance my banking record keeping.

After several DAYS of trying to get this set up to work with online banking, I had to give up.

This software appears to be a cooperative effort between Microsoft and various banks. About half of this software is advertising for online services for a fee.

The other half of the software is unusable. I estimate it would take a week to train one of my secretaries or staff to use this software. I have over 40 years of experience with computers, and, after a half of a day, I could not find out how to print a simple check from the software.

There is no resident help feature. Consequently, everytime you need to reference the very, very, very complicated use of this software to accomplish even the most simple tasks (like printing a check) you must go online to MSN Today and spend (sometimes hours) looking for the use information you need.

Are you still not convinced that this is a major RIPOFF? I installed it, and, when to the "Help About" feature to find out that in the small print my copy of the software "will expire on 1/21/2010" for online use.

In other words, you don't buy this software, you are paying just to RENT it for a year. After one year you would find out that you MUST BUY THE NEW VERSION FOR 2010 or you will be unable to use ANY OF your online banking and accounting data for 2009!

I run on Verizon Fios and have Vista on a machine that scores all 5.9s. I use Turbotax every year. It does a nice job. My taxes aren't real complicated, and I could do them manually, but I bet Turbotax pays for itself, no matter what I pay for it, mainly because there will be something I would have missed. Basic didn't complain about importing my Turbotax files from 2007, even though I used Deluxe last year, will never do that again. Its the nuttiest thing. The Basic software will try to upsell you when it sees that you need to itemize deductions. When you say no thanks, it does a perfect job of walking you through your itemized deductions. Then it will try to upsell you when you say you have your own small business. QuickBooks 2009 For Mac [OLD VERSION] Review

Disclaimer - I am not an accountant, I do not transfer files to and from an accountant, and I am a long-time mac user after being a long-time PC user. I also no longer need QB payroll.

I am notoriously skeptical of Quickbooks in general, starting my QB journey with the Windows 03 version. 5 nightmarish years ensued, with countless hours wasted on the phone with tech support from another country. (If I would go into detail about how much I hate QB tech support, we'd be here all day - I'll spare you.) QB was a means to an end, and I questioned EVERY DAY why I stayed with the program. The files were unstable and even back-up files didn't work, and I lost HOURS of work because the program was unable to recover anything.

After FINALLY transferring everything from my work PC to my home Mac as my business moved home, I got the QB Mac version 07 and was confused, to say the least. It was completely different, no payroll (though I didn't need it) and was impossible to get into.

Then the 09 version came around - I love the home page (much like the old QB PC home page) and it was much more intuitive than before. I have had only 2 crashes, and lost nothing in either. Actually, I feel the way that QB-MAC backs up information and creates its files is more stable and direct than the PC version. After a hard drive crash, back up files booted right up and all of my info was intact.

I've been using Quicken for well over a decade. I typically upgrade to the latest version about every 2 years (there generally aren't enough changes/enhancements to justify upgrading every year), and with the release of 2010, I was due for an upgrade.

I've always liked the Quicken user interface; probably because I've been using it so long that it's simply what I'm used to. Some years ago, I did give Microsoft Money a try, but didn't like the differences in the user interface -- I found it more difficult to use. So, I eventually switched back to Quicken, and I've been using Quicken ever since.

I picked up the Rental Property Manager version because I do, in fact, own a rental property. Prior to this version, I was trying to manage it using Quicken Home & Business (with the rental property operating as a business). I had also picked up the separate Rental Property Manager software (that was ONLY for managing rental properties) but it didn't work very well for me. With the 2010 Quicken Rental Property Manager I was FINALLY able to get all of my finances organized in one piece of software in a manner that actually works well for me.

One caveat I should provide here: When I upgraded to this version, I did decide to start from scratch, rather than updating my data files. That said, I did upgrade the data files initially, and used this version of the software to reconcile all of my outstanding transactions over the course of a month, while simultaneously entering new transactions in a "clean" data file that I started from scratch. One of the reasons I did this was in the hopes of straightening out a long-running problem I had been having with the Debt Reduction Planner in prior versions of Quicken.

The Debt Reduction Planner problem I had was this: some years ago, I had run the Debt Reduction Planner to put together a plan for paying off all of my bills (credit cards, mortgage, car payments, etc). This worked fine, initially. However, at some point, I tried to "recalculate" the plan and, somehow, the payment for one of my bills got converted to a negative number...This resulted in the projected balance for that bill constantly going up (based upon their recommended payment) rather than down. I tried numerous times to correct this, but never could get it straightened out, even after upgrading through at least 2 additional versions (I kept hoping it was a problem with a prior version that got straightened out with a new released). In the end, I decided the problem must have been in the data file; and that's why I chose to start with a fresh data file (rather than the file I've been using since 1994). So far, I haven't had this problem in the 2010 Rental Property Manager version.

As for managing the rental property, this software works much better than prior versions of Quicken. You're able to define your properties, set up records for your renters, schedule and track the rent payments, etc. In fact, you can set up accounts and associate them with the rental property. For example, I try to keep my personal finances separate from my rental property. So, I have a separate checking account that I only use for the rental, and a credit card that I only use for the rental. I also have a mortgage and escrow account for the property. By creating these associations, Quicken is able to provide at-a-glance views of the monthly cash flow for the property. I can easily track maintenance expenses, insurance, rents paid, rents due, property taxes, etc.

There are a number of features I don't use, like downloading transactions from my bank and credit cards. I prefer to enter everything manually, so my records account for expenditures that I've made regardless of whether they've posted to the account or not. I simply sit down with my receipts every night and update the accounts with all payments, income, and expenditures. I tried the download feature, but determined that I prefer to do the entry manually because of the lag in some postings (some purchases would take 2 or 3 days to show up on the account). If you're as meticulous as I am, you'll probably prefer to turn off the automatic downloads; but, if you're like most people, you'll probably like that feature and use it rather than having to enter data every night.

I curse the day I ever even heard of this supposed download. I have complained to Amazon by email about 2 months ago but have recieved no response at all. Now there is something which seems to have been downloaded, but which will not open. The computer says that it does not recognize the file type. I do not know what the issue is now. It has taken me forever to even get to this point.

The most frustrating thing is that I cannot get Amazon to even respond to me let alone give me a refund. I really do not want a refund, I just want this product to work as it said that it would. Now I am about 17 months late in filing my taxes and counting. I wish that I could give it a negative infinity minus infinity star rating. I started using Quicken with version 1.0, back in 19--. Naturally, that was on a PC. I stayed with it for about 10 years as it got better and better. Then Intuit started collecting personal information on its customers and that was it for me. I switched to Microsoft Money, which I had helped to develop as a usability tester. Once I got used to the differences in Money, it did everything I wanted (except it never handled my investment accounts very well).

I stayed with Money even after switching to a Mac because I could run Windows on my iMac. However, when Microsoft announced that it was dumping Money and would not support it after about another year, I found iBank.

Contrary to what another reviewer here reported, I had no problem importing my Money files after exporting them as QIFs. Note that I did not import any of my investment files as they weren't accurate in Money anyway. I track them online at the broker's Web site, so I don't care if they're in iBank. They didn't do me much good in Money either.

iBank does all of the basic stuff like maintaining checkbooks, savings accounts, credit card accounts, asset accounts, etc., and allows the creation and monitoring of multiple budgets. That's all I want from my banking software, so I give iBank four stars. I have no complaints about the product itself. It seems to cover all the bases as far as filing a small business return. It's unfortunate that Turbo Tax makes a distinction between a single and multiple-member LLCs. If you have a single-member LLC, you can use the much less expensive Home and Business version but if you have a multiple-member LLC, you have to use the full-fledged Business version. I have been a loyal customer of TurboTax software for 10+ years. It has always performed extremely well and was very economical. However, that all changed with this years version of TurboTax. I purchased the Deluxe version (Which said it included Federal + State + efile). Unfortunately, when I tried to download my State version, the program showed that I was supposed to pay an ADDITIONAL $39 + change for right to get the State portion. Many, many people have had the same problem and fixes and solutions by Intuit are slow to non-existent. According to the various forums even when they were directed to a link to download the State, they were unable to edit it after they had finished. It is very sad to see a formally "great" software program suffer such a detrimental downfall. I have had no past problems with this program, in point of fact, I was always extremely please with my association with Intuit software (TurboTax, Quicken, etc). For those of you die hards, still hanging onto the 2000 version, I have written this review for you. I have used the old Quicken 2000 for 10 years. I have used that same version from Windows 98, to Millenium, to XP. The old 2000 version does not work with Windows 7. The new Quicken 2010 version DOES!

I use Quicken to manage my check book, savings, and print checks. I do not interface it with any of the online bank services, mortgage, loan or investment information. If you are planning on using Quicken for those purposes, you may want to look into the Deluxe version, and read the user reviews first.

Here is what I did:

First, I copied the old version of Quicken 2000, to my new Windows 7 computer, in the C:\Quicken folder.

Second, I purchased the download version of Quicken 2010. On high speed, it took about 10 minutes to download.

Third, I ran the Setup file. Quicken found the old data from 2000, and imported it into 2010.

Fourth, I immediately made a backup.

Finally, I did a printer setup, and did a test to make sure I could print checks.

That was it. About a 1/2 hour invested into the process. The layout is a bit simpler to navigate than the 2000 version.

The only glitch I found was that you can only import the old data once, as far as I could tell. Make sure you make a backup right away, after importing the old data.

Where To Buy Quicken Deluxe 2010

I thought software upgrades were supposed to provide improvement. More convenience. Additional features. Increased user friendliness. Silly me.

I laid out $[...] for Quicken 2010 because Quicken Billpay would no longer interface with my Quicken 2007. In short, Quicken extorted the money out of me by disabling my old software. Since I've been a Quicken fan and user for over 10 years I had faith in the company and looked forward to a better product.

Quicken 2010 is not better than Quicken 2007. In fact, I consider it worse. It requires more mouse clicks to accomplish the same tasks as before. It doesn't transcribe debit card payments accurately; although the amounts of debit are accurate the old Quicken identified the correct payee. The new Quicken does not accurately match payees. I've tried adjusting the settings but nothing has improved its performance in this area.

I've only been using it a couple of weeks now and am being more disappointed each time I boot it up. At this point I'm tempted to quit using Quicken altogether and switch to my bank's electronic bill paying service. Quicken got this $[...] out of me.
