The section on stock income was confusing and it took me several times to figure out what information Turbo Tax wanted where. When I thought I had it figured out and finished that section, I thought I would repeat it to make sure I did it right. To my surprise, the second time I entered the information I received a different total than the first time. So I did it a third time. The third time matched the second, so I figured it must be right. Then when I got to the section for error checking, I was told I had errors in my stock sales. So I did it a forth time, which came out the same as the second and third time. This time it passed the error checking, but instead of showing that we had purchased the stocks, Turbo Tax showed we had "inherited" the stocks. I could not get Turbo Tax to change, so I printed out the form scratched out "inherited" and put in the date of purchase. We bought the 2003 VersaCheck Premium and its savings us over $300 a month since we dont have to buy pre-printed checks anymore. We have always used another accounting system, and VersaCheck was a way for us to use the lower cost blank check paper without a lot of cost or setup hassles or switching accounting systems.

In addition we can upload and distribute checks easily and much lower cost that the Intuit offering. Its built right in to VC Premium and connects very well with G7's Qchex.com electronic check portal. We can even use any bank account we want there, with minimum effort to setup and only $0.25 per check sending fee.

Our bank did ask us to use magnetic toner for some accounts, and rather than switch banks, we found that the magnetic toner and magnetic ink that we found on the versacheck.com site was reasonably priced and economical to use.

Our other programs have never saved us any money when it comes to printing checks or electronic transactions. Our accounting software is fine programs for accounting, but we find VersaCheck Check creation software pretty compelling for actually helping cut costs of printing checks or electronic check distribution. I have been using the MS Money products ever since Windows 98. I've found it much easier to use than the usual accounting programs. In the past I have tried such programs as Peachtree and Quick Books, but found them far too difficult use and understand. It's also very hard to make them work the way I want them to. I have worked the past 15 years in accounting, so you would think I could make these programs work for me, but that hasn't been the case. On the other hand, Money is flexible and versatile enough that you can customize it to your wokr habits. The only part of it that is 'Business' oriented is the Inventory section. Since I just started selling on Amazon and Ebay, I felt a need to track my inventory. Unfortunately, though, the Inventory section is just a place for you make a List of your inventory. It does not tie into any of your transactions, so you have to MANUALLY enter and remove the individual items as you buy or sell things. This is not very convenient for me. Now, I don't bother to track items, just show them as Inventory Purchases, and log the gross sales. This is working well for me. You can set up as many accounts as you need, and you can enter new categories as needed. I highly recommend this program for anyone who needs to track their home expenses and also for anyone who does NOT need to track their sales to inventory. The inventory section would work very well for keeping up with your household assets, however.

I started off doing taxes by hand with the help of an Excel spreadsheet, moved to TurboTax for a few years and have been using TaxAct for the past 5 or 6 years. Overall TaxAct has worked ok for me, but only because I'm pretty familiar with the process, including the standard forms, and I'm double-checking everything.

Several years ago I had to file an unusual form that TaxAct didn't handle correctly; I would have overpaid by hundreds of dollars if I hadn't caught the problem myself. This year it kept wanting to treat my vehicle tax deduction from the federal form as a foreign tax payment on the state form (Calif). It kept giving a yellow alert until I finally had to zero-out the entry directly on the state form. After I expressed interest in making estimated tax payments for 2010 it kept wanting to help me do that - even after I realized I didn't need to. There was no way to go back and say "No" and have it remember. If I had printed my returns without going into the custom print options I would have gotten many pages of irrelevant forms that I didn't need to file.

TaxAct is inexpensive and does the job if you stay on top of it. I have been using TurboTax for many years, and each year their product gets more invasive, less functional, and much harder to install. This year it finally reached the point of being negative utility (i.e., worth far less than the hassle).

I am a little suspicious of any program that requires administrator access to run, but that's another matter. Once the TurboTax is running, it opens up all kinds of application ports and tries to phone home, claiming it needs 'updates' to run. Their product did the same thing last year, but this year it's just gotten out of control. Several months ago I upgraded my router to one with a higher-spec firewall, which apparently doesn't allow some of the nonsense that Intuit is trying. Their help says that I have to shut off my firewall to run their software. That sounds so simple, but logically it makes no sense. When I set up the new router, every rule had a reason, for a nice balance of security against restrictive access. This router configuration has worked beautifully without a single problem. I don't want to reconfigure my network for one single application, but what even is TurboTax doing that they would require me to shut off all security, and is zero security the sort of environment where I would want to be processing and transmitting my financial data? That's just crazy. Intuit has clearly gone too far in the wrong direction.

I ended up having to download the government forms online, and I did my taxes with a calculator and stubby pencil. You could spend a lot of time working with the trial and then have to do it all again if you buy First Accounting.

I am able to handle a small payroll without subscribing to the payroll service, but it did take some experimentation and time to figure out how the user-entered tax formulas worked (there are two sample companies included with the software). I have plenty of time since I am on the phone using my FREE 30 DAY SUPPORT!
First, after a few transfers, they put you on hold for 30 minutes, THEN say "due to high call volume...blah..blah...it will over an hour!". A trick taken from the "two waiting room routine" at the doctor's office.
I am not an accountant but have used enough software that I rarely have to call tech support(if ever). The name "First Accounting" gave me the impression it was for small business's and user friendly to a degree. I called once and they took me to place(I would of never found myself) to put a check in a box. I am still having trouble with a simple account balance question.
There is a real need for a basic bookkeeping software without too many bells and whistles. I have searched but can not find one. Basically that is all I need to start my taxes for now. My wife lived in Illinois for a year while I lived most of the year in California. In such a case, it is imperative that we file our Federal returns separately, otherwise Illinois will tax us on the money I earned in California!

TaxCut not only didn't warn us of this, it incorrectly computed the Illinois taxes using the part-year resident form. This was in spite of my having specified that my wife was in Illinois the whole year, and in spite of it being very plainly stated on the Illinois form that under such circumstances, a couple filing jointly could not use the form!

Unfortunately, I allowed TaxCut to e-file my return before I checked the state returns. Now I have to file an amendment.

I was also unable to get any help from TaxCut's customer support to stop the e-filing before it went through.

For some reason my software stopped printing. No change in my accounting software so I thought maybe a corrupted file. I go to Avanquest website to see if there is any help. Web site has someone with the same problem, but I get an error on the web site when I try to get into the answer to this person's problems. Not all of the forum answers are unavailable to me, just this one.

I then, as instructed, send an email explaining problem, give my OS, error message, RAM, free harddrive space and my father's Zodiac sign. OK the Zodiac sign is a joke-- I need a laugh right now. I get an auto response and a promise of an answer within 1 business day. At least 2 business days later I call the number in the auto response email. I sit on hold for 30+ minutes. A tech finally answers me and I learn for the first time that my software is no longer supported. I can get help from the forums or from their Yahoo or Google groups.

By this time I want nothing more to do with Avanquest. I am now going out to buy another software package because I have to have it today. My bookkeeper is acting like she is going to start biting the head off bunnies if I don't do something NOW. I WILL NOT BUY ANOTHER AVANQUEST PRODUCT for as long as I remember how mad I am at them right now. I'm fairly new to Pocket Money - I bought it to go with my new Palm TX. This program helps me to be even more productive and organized than I thought possible! I no longer have to lug around my laptop PC when I travel! Now I can keep good track of my financial transactions on my PDA. I can easily keep up with my credit card balances and not be surprised at the end of the month when my bill arrives. This program also tracks other things like my bank balance since I can store several accounts and can conduct transfers and other business transactions while on the road/go. As the various account balances change, I can keep up to date with changes in my net worth as it tracks all my various account balances. Simply put, you spend, you track which account you spent from, and the PDA does the rest! This is so helpful with tracking budgeting also. I have been using Microsoft Money for many years and been pleased. I made the biggest mistake by upgrading to 2003. I had never bounced a check until now. It's register keeping is very confusing. It enters the electronic payments with a date of several days before it is due and it is very hard to tell how much money you actually have in the bank without calling and verifying with the bank.
