I've supported Ptree and a few other accounting products for years. In 2000, I used Ptree to teach accounting at UC Extension. I chose it because the software was so easy to learn -- and so class time would be spent on accounting.

But in recent years the product (specifically, Premium 2007, and Premium 2009) has become limited and not kept up with other products.
In the product description, above, there are some problems. The screens for Customers and Vendors look great (in the screen shots). What they don't show you is that INSTEAD of customers, Ptree actually shows *every* invoice.

So you cannot just sort and see the largest customer (or vendor) balance, and then drill in. Apparently, according to support, this has been a problem in the last few versions, and they are unwilling to fix it.
The support people think it is no big deal. In my mind, it takes the "dashboard" from a management level, to below that of a clerk.

There are other issues, too.
You can change the payee of a check, in the system, after a check is printed.
You can delete transactions, the list goes on.

I upgraded from Quicken Deluxe 2003 to Quicken Premier 2004. I won't address whether or not I think the 2003-2004 upgrade was worth it. What I am addressing is that I don't think the Deluxe-Premier upgrade was worth the extra cost.

Premier gets you some portfolio analysis tools and "insights", which I don't find that helpful (I am not an active or sophisticated investor).

As an aside, I -do- think the Deluxe features (over Basic) are worth the extra money. Deluxe gets you investment tracking (Basic appears to only give you basic checkbook tracking).

In 2001, I switched from Microsoft Money to Quicken. The original motivation was because I thought I might get a Mac, so I wanted my personal financial data to be prepared for the move (Quicken is also available for the Mac, but Microsoft Money is not). The feature set in 2001 was better in Quicken than in Microsoft Money (better tracking of investments like ESPP and 401k).

Recently (Quicken 2003-2004), however, I have been encountering random bugs and inconsistencies (multiple paycheck deposit accounts doesn't work consistently) that lead me to believe that Microsoft Money has probably reached parity with Quicken by now. And I still haven't switched to a Mac.

We have used Peachtree for a few years now and I can't wait for the day that I get to change to a better system. I downloaded TaxAct just a moment ago; it is cheaper than either turbo tax or taxcut, and so far, it behaves just like it is supposed to. I currently use Quickbooks Pro for Windows at my day job, at home I use Quickbook Pro 5.0 for Mac for my home based business. The mac version doesn't have all the features that the windows version does, but I believe that they will continue to upgrade (in fact the 6.0 version is just coming out with the ability to convert data back and forth between windows and mac) I have tried Myob for mac, it is ok, but I still believe Quickbooks to be the most intuitive and easy program with very strong features for tracking everything assosiated with running a business. I am on Quickbooks for Windows more than 12 hours a day, so I know very well what features need improving, yet I still prefer to use the mac for my home business. And I will continue to provide them with my feedback for future upgrades. At this point the biggest would be online banking. I can't imagine they would leave that out for much longer. While the promise of this software is great, the reality is unfortunate, at least for me... It does some things very, very well - such as download & categorize bank & visa transactions... It unfortunately lacks functionality & features in other areas that they appear to market the software for, particularly in the investment area...

- easy, accurate cross platform data exchange
- H+B option (also hurts import/export across platforms)

- fewer flaws (not just 'bugs') in some feature executions
- eliminate 'sunset' (terminating) download capability & 'planned obsolescence'

many more advanced & better features seem to exist in the pc version & while neither seems truly intuitive, I can only suggest that aligning the two platforms (and offering an H+B mac version) might help generate the sales that would justify the R+D...

I love the concept of YNAB: spending money from the previous month, planning ahead, etc. I had switched from MS Money to Quicken, and then tried YNAB. Yes, the tutorials are great, but they're really time-consuming. However, I spent the time, took the tutorials, and set up my finances in YNAB.

After a couple of months, however, I went back to Quicken. I found that Quicken also has good budgeting features, and while not in the same vein as YNAB, I just find Quicken easier to use. All of my accounts get automatically downloaded to Quicken, a feature not available in YNAB.

I bought this product last year, "upgrading" from Abby Fine Reader (had a very old version).
Although it seems very accurate at faithfully reproducing words, there are 2 things I really dislike:
1. You can't scan just part of a page, which means if there are pictures on the scanned page, you have to delete them all if you just want the text.
2. When you send the text to Word and then try to change the font & size, you get some weird text - it's not all the same (?maybe a Word problem).
So, if I want to email a news article to a friend, I find myself just scanning it as a .jpeg picture to avoid the hassle of using Omnipage 16.

Very disappointed in TAXCUT 2005 aftermath -- we were audited in 2007 for 2005 -- IRS denied all business expense (teacher and officer) even safety deposit box fee of $35. Denied all costs of filing, doing taxes, etc. Denied teacher computer cost.
H.R. Block helper was great, called the IRS, talked them through it and still they renewed the demand ($4000), added interest and penalities, took our stimulus check of $1200 and then threatened and began a lien on our house. This was all done from the Tennessee IRS office -- we live in Arizona. After we got our congressman involved we just now (April, 2008) got the appeal moved to Arizona, so we can do it in person and H.R. Block can go with us.
H.R. Block is great -- TAXCUT not so great.
IRS is awful for small people, like us to deal with. Tax attorneys not interested in small audits like ours.

Not only does the program not work well. Microsoft is abandoning this software line at the end of the year. So you won't get support on anything else.

I've been using Microsoft Money for about 9 years. This most recent version is terrible. It blows up on loading about 4 out of 5 times.

Lowest Price Microsoft Money 2003 Deluxe [OLD VERSION]

I only use Microsoft Money 2003 for my checking account. I go to my bank account online, hit a few buttons, and import my latest bank transactions directly into Microsoft Money 2003. It's very easy, and it always reconciles to the penny. If you import the exact same transactions a hundred times, they will only show up once in MS Money 2003.

With that said, I am also an accountant, and I have been using QuickBooks for years. Most small businesses today use either QuickBooks or another camparable accounting software program. The basic 2008 editiion is only a few hundred dollars and is definetely worth it for accounting.

Save Crown Money Map Financial Software

This software does a good, but not great, job. My wife and I have used it for almost two years.

On the plus side: it is the only software I have found that does true envelope budgeting. The tools here are much more powerful than Quicken or Money (I have used both before switching to Money Map). The system is tremendously powerful and flexible, although it has a steep learning curve. You can't have powerful, flexible, and easy to use all at the same time.

On the minus side: it is slooooowwwww. I've used other Java programs that aren't this slow, so something else (inefficient database?) is making this program slow. I have a decently fast computer (2.4GHz dual core processor, more than 2GB of RAM, running XP) and still it's slow. Occasionally I've hit a real honest-to-goodness bug (not just user error), although they have made patches to those problems once I have reported them.

On the whole: I use it and hesitantly recommend it because I have not found any other program that does real envelope budgeting. If I ever found a real competitor for this product, I would seriously consider switching.Get more detail about Crown Money Map Financial Software.

Cheapest Bookkeeper 2009

I never wrote a review on Amazon.. but I want to warn potential buyers about this software..
I only had issues with it from day 1!! Issues with "Power library" which supposedly has nothing
to do with Bookkeeper -so why does it appear every time I try to use this very program???-, issues
between my CD version and a "new version" -that you HAVE to install- not letting me use the program at all!!
And to top it off, a very slow tech support.. This is very disappointing to say the least!!
If you are like me, just starting a business with many things to learn, you don't need to have
a software adding hours of headache to your already full plate!!
